Why should I pay for a print when I can print it myself?

For starters,Unauthorized reproduction of any images found on this web site is strictly forbidden by law (not to mention a complete waste of time). The photos displayed in the galleries have been greatly reduced in resolution and compressed to conserve space. This means that the only high quality print you can get from these images is going to be about the size of a match book and even then will not  be as good as the original due to the compression format. Gallery photos are about 1/24 the resolution of the originals.  In addition, the photos in the gallery are raw shoots which have not been edited for brightness, contrast, color correction, noise, or framing. Image editing is a fairly involved process and I don't waste time cleaning up sample photos in the gallery. (I do cleanup every picture that I print.)  Simply put, the images as they are displayed in the photo gallery are not worth printing.

But what if I want to email a picture from your web site to a friend or family member?

I have a good solution for this. Rather than sending a (illegal) copy of the picture, simply email a link to this page.  This has the benefit of sending multiple images in a single email message. Secondly, it's more efficient to email link to a web site than it is to email an image.  (No need to waste bandwidth unnecessarily.)  This email photo gallery link is a free service of MBR Consultants.  I will put a email hyperlink of each gallery page to be used to email friends and family for your convenience.

How long will these galleries stay on your web site?>

They will stay on the web site as long as I have disk space on my server to hold them. Currently, by my rough calculations I have enough storage to hold about 4000 images.  Once I exceed this limit, I'll start replacing the oldest galleries with newer ones.  My guess is that this sliding window will leave galleries intact on the web site for several months.

Can I get a print of a picture that has been removed from your web site?

Yes. I archive all pictures I take and edit. (See the section on Backups under SOHO Consulting.) If you know the photograph number (e.g. 0017-380-2623), I can retrieve the image from the archives.  This is a time consuming process that can done be but one that I prefer to avoid. If you see a picture you like, its best to place the order while its still displayed in the galleries.

Can I link to your web site from mine?

Absolutely. Go nuts.

What do I need to do to use a picture from your gallery in my web site?

You may use pictures from this gallery in your web site provided the following conditions are met:

  • You may not sell or distribute any picture found on this web site.
  • Send an email to me and let me know which pictures you want to use and the URL of the web site that will be using them.
  • Place the following by line adjacent to each picture with a hyperlink to www.mbr-consultants.com from MBR Consultants, Inc as follows:

Can I publish pictures from your galleries in our news letter, news paper, flyer, or brochure?

Yes, as long as you send an email me to negotiate payment, terms, and conditions.

Why is there so much variation in picture quality?

This happens for several reasons. A lot of times I will take pictures just to experiment with various settings on the camera. I will intentionally try different white balance, ISO sensitivity, focus, and exposure setting just to see how the camera will react.  In most cases, these variations are easily cleaned up with photo editing.  Another factor is the amount of available lighting when I shoot. For example, there are 100 light fixtures (which I believe are mercury vapor lights) that illuminate the skating rink at the Triangle SportsPlex.  To save energy, they usually only turn on about a quarter of these lights for non-hockey skating activities.  Since I shoot using available lighting, this forces me to increase my ISO sensitivity settings in order to get my shutter speed up high enough to freeze motion.  A high ISO setting introduces banding and high frequency noise in the images which makes the pictures look grainy.  Again, I have filters to clean this noise up, but at the expense of picture sharpness.  So basically, I try to use as low an ISO setting as possible that will keep my shutter speed fast enough to freeze most of the action in a shot.  The staff at the Triangle SportsPlex are very cooperative with letting me turn on the lights when I shoot.  However, although I don't know exactly how much it cost to run those lights, I do know that it is quite expensive so I try to limit my request for full lighting for special occasions.

Do you put every picture you take on your web site?

No. I examine every shot I take and throw out the obviously bad and unsalvageable shots. If I have redundant shots (nearly identical shots of the same subject taken vary close together) I will pick one for the web site and drop the others.  I will however, put lots of shots that I am sure nobody wants to buy on the web site.  Think of it as just a little free service.  Although the majority of these pictures are not something you would like to have in a frame sitting on your desk, I figure some of them are fun to look at and might bring back happy memories for the kids.  After all, that's what its all about.

Why do I only see one page of pictures when I open a photo gallery?

Very seldom do I ever publish a gallery where all of the pictures fit on a single page of thumbnails.  In most cases, people can not access more than one gallery page because the gallery page does not fit on their monitor screen.  All pages, including the gallery pages (thumbnail images) and the popup windows for the individual images, can be resized by simply grabbing a corner of the window with the mouse and dragging.

How do I order a print when all I see when I click on a thumbnail is an enlarged image?

You are probably experiencing the same image too large problem referred to the the Why do I only see one page of pictures when I open a photo gallery? question.  More than likely, the image is too large to fit on your screen and you are not seeing the Order Print button located at the bottom of every enlarged image.  The solution is the the same as in the afore mention question.  All pages, including the gallery pages (thumbnail images) and the popup windows for the individual images, can be resized by simply grabbing a corner of the window with the mouse and dragging.

I can't find the pictures you took the other day.

Usually I will publish pictures within three days of the event.
